I love this salon, and I REALLY love how Alex does my hair. She is fantastic with both cuts and color. After moving to Seattle, I went through 6 stylists at 5 salons before I found Alex. With Alex, I've never had those anxious ”What is this person gonna do to my hair? Why is she picking up THAT utensil?” feelings when sitting in the chair!
I would highly recommend Alex to anyone looking for superb cuts and color, especially if you have fine hair and like lots of textured layers to add volume. To me, it's worth paying a little extra to look and feel great.

Stylist Maria Espinosa is an artistic genius! My hair has never looked better! With more grey hairs than my mother, coloring for me is a must. I now have to carry Maria's cards with me because I get so many compliments on my hair! The scalp and hand massages alone are worth the visit. The salon is lovely and I am always treated extremely well by all of the staff. I always have an extra swing in my step as I exit the salon.

This is a fabulous salon and I absolutely adore my stylist, Alex. She is a true artist with both cut and color. My hair is short. Alex gives an incredible haircut that always works with my hair, not against it, and she is amazing when it comes to color. I keep my hair red, a difficult shade to get right. I have never found another stylist who can pull off the kind of magic that Alex can with color.
The front desk staff at this salon is terrific. They are always welcoming, cheerful, and gracious. The place is very clean and the entire staff seems enthusiastic and highly professional. I always leave feeling very, very good.

I have been having my hair relaxed for years, but I have never had better relaxers than the ones done by Nyesha. She is simply the best. While the cost is steep at this salon, the outcome is worth it! Never burned, always stick straight. I wish I wasn't moving out of state, I would have never stopped coming here!

I just had the best time with Maria!! She listened, gave some great tips for styling & gave the best scalp massage in Seattle!! I'll be back for sure!

If you want great hair, go to Gary Manuel and you will not be disappointed. Any stylist here can do technically amazing haircuts and beautiful color. I like a stylist that listens to what I want but still calls the shots and does what will look the best on me. My favorites here are Opal and Heather, they keep me coming back!!
Jesse M. | Seattle, WA
My haircut is fabulous! My hair looks so natural with this color she helped me pick out! (I wanted to go darker.) She totally formed this haircut to look amazing on me. Theresa you are truly amazing. Thank goodness you could squeeze me in that random friday afternoon. I love your puggles. Love the service here, they pamper you, conversation is wonderful, magazines not out of date, tea and water, lots of smiles.

In my 12 years as a customer I have had several stylists, and I have been happy with every single one. How often can you say that?
Why is Gary Manuel such a great salon? First - customer service. You are greeted warmly, treated as a VIP, and catered to from the minute you walk in the door. Second - superior stylists with amazing knowledge of color and cut. I have gone from magenta to platinum to black and back again at Gary Manuel - without a hitch. Third - class, style, and attitude. The staff are young, mod, happy, and on the cutting edge. Fourth - great products. Fifth - a sense of community and caring through charities and fundraising events that engage you and make you think about the world we live in and life in general.
The decor is hip. The music is hip. The people are hip. I referred my mother and my sister there. I referred my secretary there. I once referred a random stranger there who commented on my hair color at at Taco Del Mar. With each referral came a letter from Gary himself, thanking me for my confidence. How lovely.

I love Gary Manuel.
I used to let my hair grow really long, then see Katrin for a really drastic cut - drastic enough to donate my hair. She was great. Awesome conversation, and I would absolutely trust her cutting off 10+ inches from my hair. I was delighted every time.
Also for Sunny - my sisters love her, entrusting their hair, as well as their husbands' and sons' hair, with her.
Even after moving away from Seattle (to CA and AK), we would go back to Gary Manuel for haircuts. Finally though, we had to tear ourselves away and find new stylists closer to home. Sigh, we miss you Katrin and Sunny.

I started going to Jeff at Phase3 and followed him to GM when he graduated because, well, he's amazing. I am no hair expert and need someone who can use their imagination to repeatedly come up with something fun and functional and I leave every time feeling as if I'm the one who's made out like a bandit. I've been stopped in the locker room after a long run after already not having washed my hair for three days for someone to ask who cuts my hair. For anyone who prefers to leave the ideas to the experts and let the creative juices flow while you sit back and watch as you're magically transformed into someone whose hair does not reflect their ability to actually know what to do with it otherwise (and I mean that in a very good way where I readily admit I'm a stylistic moron) then he's HIGHLY recommended. I'm sure everyone there is excellent, however, because this kind of treatment just wouldn't fly with the pocketbook if it wasn't actually THAT good.
Monica P | Seattle, WA
Visited GM - Phase 3 today, for a foil and cut. After mentioning to the receptionist that I had long, naturally curly hair, she suggested Maria and it could not have worked out better. Maria was AWESOME!
She did a combo of highlights/lowlights to help blend all those pesky gray hairs. I have a lot of hair and she was incredibly fast, professional, and also very personable.
Maria spent a perfect amount of time getting to know more about me, but also allowed me to just sit and enjoy some relax time.
Sometimes when you have long hair, there is a certain level of worry that the stylist might take off too much. Not once did I ever feel like that with Maria. In fact, I felt so comfortable with her abilities, I told her to do what she thought best.
Included in the salon ”experience” -a lovely cuppa tea, relaxing hand massage, euphoric scalp massage, and great take-away styling tips.
I even got a compliment from Gary himself on my way out the door. Which made me feel even more special when I stepped back out onto the city streets.
The pricing is really reasonable, since Phase 3 employees are earning their eventual spot into the main GM salon. My only regret....I didn't go sooner. :-)
Mary P. | Seattle, WA
God I love Phase III. It's such a great experience from beginning to end, and I get a great cut to boot. I'm really bad at articulating what I want my hair to look like, and I've gotten some pretty bad cuts over the years because of that. But Connie can somehow translate my inept descriptions into not just what I want, but a few steps better to make my hair look great. I really can't believe how affordable it is considering the level of service and quality of the work!

The Salon is dedicated to spending a significant amount of time educating their stylists.

I've been going to GM for probably 8 plus years now (since college) in Phase 3 Aveda's training salon? I started with Heather when she was just in Phase 3 and have followed her as she's developed and blossomed into ”I have to wait 8 weeks to get an appointment with” stylist. I go in never knowing what I want and I just allow her to be creative. I've got dark course hair so the right cut, sheering and texturing is important. Her prices have increased significantly so I try to go to her maybe once every other time. She's awesome if you are into ”edgy and different”. I had the Victoria Beckham's do way before it became popular! She is excellent w/foils and texturing.
When I am feeling frugal I like to go see Serena in Phase 3. She has assisted Heather and does a great job styling and coloring.

Have you ever wished for a miracle on your head? Well, I did...and I got one.
The background: I'd been dying my hair increasingly unnatural shades of red (from a natural dark blond) for about nine months. As I'm going back to school and will have much less time and money on my hands, I wanted to start the move back to my natural color, which isn't amazing, but heck - takes no upkeep, right? Anyway, I loved my flaming red locks, but realized it was time to kiss them goodbye. *weeps*
I'd initially gone to the Aveda Institute in Capitol Hill and let me tell you, I wasn't feeling the love there...but I'll save that for another review. They were kind enough to refer me to Phase 3 (where fully licensed Aveda stylists are getting in their last bit of training), which is just two doors up from the main salon.
I went in for a consultation with, admittedly, low hopes. Given how I was treated at ”Phase I” (the Institute in Capitol Hill), I was fairly discouraged and trying to come to terms with shaving my head. Anyway, I sat down with Jessica and her supervisor and they talked me through what I was going for. As I was sitting there, several stylists walked by and commented on my amazing color. I perked up a bit. These people weren't all about boring blond highlights - they seemed to have an appreciation for creative and funky hair. Positive sign #1. As we talked more, I started to understand what the process would entail, but I wasn't feeling like it was impossible. Positive sign #2. I asked for a price quote, knowing they couldn't tell me exactly, but I wanted a max and a min to know what I was working with. Given all the work it would take and the maximum quote I was given, I was blown away - so, so affordable. Positive sign #3. They did a test strand to see how my bright red color would lift - fluorescent yellow. I'm talking like what you highlight notes with...but Jessica seemed to take it in stride and reassure me we could get it to a natural looking tone. Positive sign #4.
So, two days later, at 10 am, I go in for my appointment. Folks are nice enough, but I'm ready for action - I head to the chair and Jessica gets going. Now, I won't take you through the entire visit play-by-play because it took 9.5 hours. However, I can tell you Jessica truly worked a miracle. She went through and carefully lifted the color off section by section - I had parts that I'd bleached out entirely at one point to get a brighter red color, so they had to be handled rather delicately. She patiently soldiered through and unlike MANY other stylists I've had, didn't make me feel guilty for the vast amount of hair I happen to grow out of my head. When the color was lifted, it was a horrid range of bright oranges and yellows and I began to panic. Jessica, however, kept her cool, and Gary (as in THE Gary of Gary Manuel Salon) came over for frequent consultations.
The end result - my hair is about a level darker than my natural with a bit more warmth and the spots that were once fluorescent red (I'm talking glowed in blacklight, folks) are now a dark sandy blond. I can tell you this is nothing short of miraculous. So, A+++ on getting my very unnatural head back to natural...but, that's not all.
Jessica is personable, friendly, and fantastic. She offered to go get me a coke and a snack - what stylist does that?! AND...it turns out she won a national award for cut/color/style when she was in Phase I training. Um...folks, I think I totally scored. I paid a total of about $220 (not including tip)...for 9.5 hours of work!!! And, believe me, it was work!!!
Okay, but it gets better - the neighboring stylist, Monica (who rocks the unnatural red hair I so love), bought Jessica and I some icy cool Shirley Temples since we were there so late (how CUTE is that?!). AND, Gary himself reassured me not to feel badly for keeping them there - that they'd all stay until midnight if they had to, in order to get it right.
Can I say...WOW!!! Seriously, this was completely unlike any salon experience I've ever had. The stylists here are talented, friendly, and beyond affordable. Jessica will be helping me over the next year to gradually get my hair to where I don't *need* to come in any more, but frankly, I'm sure I will.
I'm truly blown away!

I just got my hair cut by Serrana at Phase 3. She did an amazing job! I'm always really nervous about getting my hair cut because I've had some bad experiences in the past. But she took the time to talk through what she wanted to do with my hair, so we were both on the same page. She suggested something a little more drastic, but when saw that I was nervous about it, backed off and came up with a new plan. Which was awesome. I think I will try something new next time!
I had been looking for a new place to try because I had been going to Vain where I would leave it it wouldn't even look like my hair had been cut and I ended up spending more money because I had to go back so frequently! I had also one time tried Gene Juarez training salon downtown and ended up being in the chair for four hours...for a hair cut...very odd...
The Aveda products smell amazing and Serrana didn't push too hard to make me feel like I had to buy something to leave but talked about the product that I did show interest in, and actually walked out buying it (and I still feel good about the purchase!)
Serrana was really friendly and took her time doing my hair. Sometimes I would walk out of Vain in 20 minutes...which just seemed to fast! She also gave me an amazing scalp massage and I appreciate when stylists take them time to wash and condition my hair. Serrana is amazing! I highly recommend her!
Phase 3 is a little noisy and I did have to wait a little bit before they were ready for me, but the people are really nice and outgoing, so it was no big D. I highly recommend this place!

Imagine my excitement when we moved into our new apartment and found out that we had awesome, young, hip and friendly upstairs neighbors. It didn't hurt that one was a massage therapist and one was a hair dresser.
Unfortunately they recently moved out, and although I miss them terribly, one still lives across the street and the other just graduated to the Phase 3 program at Gary Manuel salon in Belltown so now she's only a hop, skip and a jump away. Plus, it's possible for me to get an excellent color and cut for under $100. And boy is there pampering in store for you at Phase 3:
First you change into a robe, then you get offered tea, water or coffee and they'll even run out and refill the parking meter for you if your hair is covered in goop and you're 10 seconds away from giving the city more damn money. (They don't pay for the parking FYI: that would be going too far).
For your shampoo, you'll be treated to an aromatherapy scalp massage and warm towels on your neck, I've decided that my scalp is now my current favorite place to be massaged.
All the stylists are sweet and fashionable and even Gary, the big cheese, himself came over to chat me up about my Kindle. He was down to earth and obviously very, very good at what he does!
Shawna did my hair and I walked away with exactly the color I wanted: a gorgeous chesnut brown with mahagony undertones. Their Aveda products are wonderful, reasonably priced and long lasting.
It's been about nine months since I last colored my hair and boy did I need it. Not to mention how good it felt to be pampered. I'll definitely be back!

Just got back from Phase 3. I've been going there for over 2 years now, and have gone to probably 5 or 6 different stylists. That would make me nervous at any other salon, especially a training salon, but here it doesn't seem to be a problem. No matter who does your hair, it always comes out looking really nice (if I don't say so myself!).
To sum it up: You get high quality services for a great price. (That's what SHE said.)

Let me start off by saying that I haven't paid for a haircut in 3 years....I just moved here and one of my best friends in FL was also a stylist, so I couldn't get her to let me pay (not that I'm complaining). So, I've been putting off getting a haircut for several months now - but I couldn't wait any longer, and so I came to Yelp to find some referrals.
There are some salons right in my neighborhood that probably give fantastic cuts, but range roughly $50-$75 for a ladies haircut. Hard to go from free to $75.....so I started looking for alternatives. Rudy's is just down the street, but for some reason I was apprehensive, and so after some research, I settled on Phase 3.
So, finally to the review! I was greeted by a friendly guy at the front desk and offered tea or water - then given a dressing room to change into the obligatory (but nice) smock....a few minutes later and my stylist appeared, ready to cut my locks. She was no nonsense, which was fine by me (I don't need to chit chat and I think she sensed that and was relieved). I gave her an idea of what I wanted done - a large departure from what I came in with - and she gave me a fantastic cut. Trendy, but cut so that I can make it work for visiting clients. All for $27! Yes, that's right, $27! And they use all Aveda products - I was encouraged to purchase the products used, but not in an aggressive way (I passed and it was no problem at all).
I would highly recommend Phase 3 for your next cut. I'll be going there again once this one needs some adjusting.

I wanted to tell everyone how GREAT Jeff is!! He has cut my hair twice now, and it is my all time favorite cut!! He listened to me and brought his own vision to life!!! I have been going to the Gary Manuel salon for a long time and have always been so happy with the styles I have walked away with! Jeff ROCKS!!!

Flashback: 1996, and Sharon Stone was on the cover of a magazine with a cute little pixie cut. I had shoulder-length hair at the time. The closest place I could find to my Belltown apartment that had an available same-day appointment was Gary Manuel Salon. Boy, was I lucky.
I began my Gary Manuel love affair at Phase Three - the now-closed downstairs section of Gary Manuel that served as the training ground for the stylists. Over the years as stylists ”graduated” and moved upstairs, I remained at Phase Three - never, ever disappointed in the new person who picked up where the last person left off.
Eventually I moved upstairs to the main salon with a particular stylist, both because he was amazing and because I was able to afford a bit more charged in the main salon. He eventually moved on, but I remained loyal to the salon. In my 12 years as a customer I have had several stylists, and I have been happy with every single one. How often can you say that?

Their prices are competitive for a mid to higher range salon. Don't expect Super Cut prices. You definitely won't have a Super Cut experience.

Thank you first to Prema - your ROTD the other day made me discover this place... and since my hair was looking a little suburbia-ish, I called that it was time for a hair cut.
I called yesterday and made an appointment for today... yeay for not having to schedule weeks in advance! I came in and they whisked me right away... no waiting!
She listened to what I wanted, and she put in her suggestions (I was pretty breezy about it). All in all, it came out great, and relatively quick for a training salon!
Of course they used the wonderful Aveda products, which if I had the money for, I would purchase EVERYTHING THE OFFER. But alas, I cannot.
My hair smells and feels great. My hubby also thinks it's cute, so kudos there, too!
Only one star taken though - the place was pretty empty (first appointment of the day on a Tuesday) and even then, it felt like I had to scream to talk to her... perhaps the acoustics were a bit much. I get that you want to have it very clean and industrialized (is that even a word??), but I'd like to be able to chat it up while gettin' my hairs did.
I'll be back... and hopefully within 6 months from the last hair cut.

I have been getting my hair cut by Heather at Gary Manuel for over the past year. After moving to Seattle in August of 2006 I didn't know which salon to go to and my hair was starting to get pretty shaggy. After getting a bad haircut at Celsius Salon near Northgate I was reluctant to try other salons in Seattle. Thankfully, favorable reviews of this salon convinced me to try it out-- I am so pleased I found Heather at Gary Manuel.
I have probably been in to see her five times since I started going to the salon (plus a number of times for my free fringe trim) and everytime she has done an outstanding job. She is fun and personable and is always up for trying new cuts. She is great at making suggestions when I'm not sure how I want her to cut my hair and I always leave the salon pleased. Unlike many other salons there is no pressure to purchase product. I have certainly found my stylist and I recommend you give her a try-- I'm sure you'll love the results!

My long hair needed a good chop. A friend recommended Dena at this salon, so i made an appointment with her, not really knowing exactly what i wanted to do with my mop. She was so great! Welcoming, sweet, and really knows hair. She talked me through my options and offered advice, then explained what she was doing while she cut. I also loved the nice scalp massage during the conditioning.
So i just got back to my office, and everyone LOVES the new cut! It's a lot shorter, choppy, and just plain looks good. I'd definitely recommend Dena to anyone! Make sure you book in advance, i had to wait 3 weeks for an appointment. The prices differ depending on which stylist you use, but Dena was $50.

Hair is great. I change my hair all the time, and I am damn lucky it doesn't fall out. Breaking the bank with multiple salon visits is not so great. So here is another one of my fashion budget friendly secrets.
Phase 3 is right next to Gary Manuel and it is cheaper because all the stylists are students that are almost ready to graduate. I actually like going to Phase 3 better than going to Gary Manuel oooh la la fancy salon. Phase 3 is more laid back and my stylist and I talk about my hair in a very fashion forward technical way because she is in the midst of studying it. I like being involved in the chemical process and thinking about trends and fashion. Plus, the students run by their ideas and talk to a grand master stylist before they do anything to your hair. It is definitely a learning environment and there are dull and bright crayons in every box.
So far I have saved money and ended up with a great cuts.
The students obviously change all the time so my suggestion is to ask for someone good at what you need before you go. It makes it less of a gamble that way. For example I asked for someone good at color corrections because my hair hated me and threaten to go form a union and go on strike.

this place is great for those of us whose budgets don't include $200 haircuts once a month. i saw parker who did a great job on my hair, listening to exactly what i said and constantly re-evaluating what we were doing to my everchanging ”do”. she also cut it keeping in mind that i am trying to grow it out and basically helped me see the light at the end of the tunnel...she was chatty, but not too much so.
it also still has that salon feel and for some place that only charges around $30 bucks a pop, that is very hard to find. it makes buying the products so much less painful and you still get to leave with that great ”new cut” shine...
Bruce R. | Bellevue, WA
I've been getting my hair cut at Gary Manuel for more than 10 years. When I lived in Tokyo, I used to come back to get my hair cut in Seattle. I used to say that if I ever won the lottery, I would come to Gary Manuel each morning and have them shampoo my hair and massage my scalp (I'm still waiting on the lottery win).
Service is top notch. Nice people greet you. They offer you a protective garment (I wear mine over my clothes while others change in their changing rooms) and something to drink. You usually wait a few minutes -- watch the looping fashion show on the TV screens or surreptitiously spy on the other people getting their hair done.
I've had several people do my hair, but my favorites are Amy and Katrin, Both do an excellent job with my cut and color. They make me feel very comfortable even though I'm not metrosexual enough to fit in completely. I like the fact they trim my eyebrows and dye them when necessary -- it's a nice extra touch that they do without me having to ask. The shampoo/scalp massage is amazingly wonderful -- the only hard part is not falling asleep.
There is only one bad part and that is the crazy tipping system that goes on in a lot of places. You pay and tip by credit card and then they hand you the cash and a tiny manila envelope with ”To” and ”From”. It makes me feel like I'm sending valentines back in 2nd grade. Give these hardworking people their tip money without making me lick the tiny envelopes (risking a tiny but painful paper cut).
Pricing ranges by the stylist, and I've found them all to be very good, so if you want a better value, you can opt for a more junior stylist (Gary Manuel trains its own people). But I'm sticking with Amy (and Katrin if Amy's busy). :)

I've been there several times for both cut and color. Recently I've had Audrey cut my hair. She's done an excellent job. It's a nice salon and very reasonably priced. They have tea, water, etc available as well as magazines and all the stuff you'd find at a regular salon. I've never been to the actual Gary Manuel salon but I'm guessing that it's phenomenal if they're to go above and beyond Phase 3, their training salon.
I'd highly recommend it!

I went to phase 3 twice and was really empressed both times. I had just moved here in november from Tennessee and was dreading having to find new stylest as I had just had my long locks cut right before moving. I had first gone in november. I called and of course was very picky and leery. I specified that I needed a stylest who was familiar with the razor cut and I was recommended to Mia. I came in and was pleasantly surprised. Mia was very personable as was the staff. Left with a great cut.
I decided I wanted to grow my hair out and (silly me) didn't think I needed to get it trimmed in doing so. Come May and I had a mullet. So i figured it was time to go back to the salon for a touch up. I requested Mia but she was booked for the time I had wanted to go so was after describing my hair and what I wanted done I was recommended to Dan. I came in to my appt and was greeted nicely as allways with the great staff. Dan was AWESOME!! He knew exactly what I wanted and needed done. And I have gotten soooo many complements. I will definately be going back.
I highly recommend this Phase 3 and Dan. This is a place where you can get a quality cut for half the price. The service is amazing and of course Aveda Products. Just can't go wrong.

My favorite salon yet. After trying many places and many stylists with mixed results, I took a friend's referral and gave Alex at Gary Manuel a try. I have never been disappointed. The salon is great-- hip and upscale without being pretentious. And best of all, I love my hair-- every time!

Hallelujah, I have finally found my hair stylist!! I was super spacy and loopy today, and I walked by Gary Manuel probably for the millionth time, and decided to walk in and sign up for a haircut, I made an appt for later that day. I was nervous because my last seattle salon experience (at Vain) was not exactly fantastic. I was pleasantly surprised, however, at gary manuel, first thing when I come in they gave me some info to fill out and a coffe with splenda(it was freezing, that earned major points). MY stylist, sonia, spent some time t alking to me about what I was looking for and helped describe what her thoughts were. She completely listened to me and gave me one of the best haircuts that I have had. I would definitely recommend checking this place out, and go to SONIA!

This salon is great and the service is probably the best I have ever had. I ALWAYS walk out happy with my services. I always have that problem where I have an idea in my head about what I want done to my hair, but am not able to articulate this to the stylist very well. Dena my stylist at G.M. practically reads my mind and just does exactly what I want and sometimes does stuff I didn't even know I wanted. They have a good selection of product and they carry the entire Aveda line. The staff is really friendly and accomodating. I have never had a bad experience here.It is on the pricey side, but you get what you pay for.

Love this place! I started going here on the advice of a friend back in 2000. I started going to a stylist, Theresa, who was in the training portion of the salon (Phase Three) & when she graduated, stayed with her. I've had probably 100s of haircuts & colors there & have been pleased every time. A lot of that is thanks to Theresa of course, but I also like the atmosphere - though sometimes very busy, someone up front always takes your coat, offers you water, tea or coffee & keeps you posted about the wait (if there is one). The few times I had a hair ”emergency” (read: I waited too long to get a haircut then expected to get an appt pronto), I had other stylists & both times had good experiences even though they weren't my ”regular” person. They had all my notes, had clearly spoken w/ Theresa, etc...I always feel at home & that the service are worth every penny (not inexpensive!)
